Faced with the same huge challenges (energy supply, terrorism, migration, multinational domination, competition between great powers …) that every member country of the Union must face, which for pure rationality should be faced together and not each on its own, it seems that many European politicians and peoples, forgetting that unity makes strength, propose and wish to return to pure nationalism and to practice the politics of the ostrich.

The Union has been split by the recent years crises: North again South, West against East. Anti-European populism, neo-fascism, illiberal democratic governments are developing throughout Europe.

The hope created by the election of French pro-European President Emmanuel Macron has aroused much hope, but his desire to go towards a real European sovereignty does not seem to create enthusiasm among his partners, paralyzed by internal opposition and national egoism.

Peoples are angry because of impoverishment, of the fear of the others different, of the growth of inequality or of the inhuman treatment of migrants. Guilt of Who? Perhaps from the politicians’ incapacity to respond to these challenges, with a project, with the defense of the founding values ​​of the Union, with the desire to overcome our small differences by the development of what unites us, much higher than that which divide us.

Europe is politics and only politics, that is citizens’ actions, can change it. It is a work of Sisyphus, but it must be done by all those who understand that Europe is no longer at the center of the world, that its disunity means not only its disappearance, but the risk of dependence of each of us from the great non-European powers.

Maybe the irresponsability of Trump will serve the cause?
